The Dominican Republic's coinage was effectively controlled by U.S. financial interests from 1905 onward, when a customs receivership was established to service the country's foreign debt. The silver issues produced through the mid-twentieth century were struck under conditions where Washington had more practical say over Dominican monetary policy than Santo Domingo did.
The 1937 start date coincides with the consolidation of Trujillo's dictatorship, and coins from the early run of this type were struck at the Philadelphia Mint.
