| Opmerkingen |
The Banco Garantizador was one of several private banks authorized to issue currency in the Dominican Republic during the 1870s, a period of chronic fiscal instability and shifting political control. The fractional centavo denominations in this series were a direct response to the acute shortage of small-change coins in everyday circulation — a problem that plagued the country repeatedly throughout the nineteenth century.
The National Bank Note Company, at that time one of the dominant security printers in North America, handled the contract. Their Dominican work from this period is relatively uncommon in surviving collections, as the issuing banks themselves were short-lived.
