| 正面描述 | Round cast brass coin featuring a central square perforation surrounded by four Chinese characters arranged in cruciform reading order. The reign title legend 咸豐重寶 (Xianfeng Zhongbao) is disposed in the four cardinal positions around the central square hole, with 咸 above, 寶 below, 重 to the right, and 豐 to the left, all rendered in regular script (kaishu). The characters are bold and well-defined in relief against a flat, unornamented field. A plain raised rim encircles the entire obverse. |

The Xianfeng reign saw the Board of Revenue authorize experimental brass strikes as the Qing cash coin system buckled under the financial strain of the Taiping Rebellion. Trial pieces of this type were produced to assess brass as a substitute alloy at provincial mints, including Zhejiang, where copper supplies were increasingly unreliable. Most never entered circulation.
Hartill 22.1039 is among the scarcer documented trials from the Zhejiang facility, distinguished from regular issue pieces by alloy composition rather than die design.
