Additional information

The Xianfeng reign saw the Board of Revenue authorize experimental brass strikes as the Qing cash coin system buckled under the financial strain of the Taiping Rebellion. Trial pieces of this type were produced to assess brass as a substitute alloy at provincial mints, including Zhejiang, where copper supplies were increasingly unreliable. Most never entered circulation.

Hartill 22.1039 is among the scarcer documented trials from the Zhejiang facility, distinguished from regular issue pieces by alloy composition rather than die design.
