Four Chinese characters in regular script (kaishu) are arranged in cruciform fashion around the central aperture, reading top-to-bottom and right-to-left: 咸豐重寶 (Xianfeng Zhongbao), denoting the reign title of the Xianfeng Emperor and the coin's status as a 'heavy treasure.' The raised characters are bold and well-formed, set against a flat, unadorned field typical of Qing dynasty cast coinage. The broad outer rim is plain and slightly raised, providing a clean border to the design.
