Obverse description Cast copper cash coin featuring a central square hole flanked by four Chinese characters arranged in cruciform fashion, read in the traditional sequence top, bottom, right, left. The legend 同治通寶 (Tongzhi Tongbao) is rendered in regular script (kaishu) within the plain inner rim, with each character occupying one of the four cardinal positions around the central perforation. The fields are flat and unadorned, bounded by a raised inner rim surrounding the square hole and a plain outer rim. The casting is typical of the Qing provincial style, with moderately defined strokes.
