Thành Thái, the tenth Nguyễn emperor, came to the throne in 1889 at age ten and proved unexpectedly resistant to French colonial authority — unusual enough that the French eventually deposed and exiled him to Réunion in 1907, the same year this issue ceased. The Board of Revenue Mint in Huế operated under increasing French administrative pressure throughout his reign, and the coinage it produced occupies an awkward position: nominally imperial Vietnamese currency, issued under a sovereignty the French were actively dismantling.
The eight Barker varieties reflect ongoing adjustments in die workmanship across the production run rather than any single deliberate redesign.
