The Hongwu reign saw a deliberate and ultimately failed attempt to suppress copper coinage entirely in favor of paper money — the Da Ming Baochao notes issued from 1375. Copper cash were officially banned for private transactions in 1380, making many issues from this reign juridically illegal almost as soon as they left the mint. The ten-cash denominations were part of an ambitious multi-denominational scheme that proved impossible to enforce, as the paper notes quickly depreciated and the population reverted to metal.
The "Gui" board inscription identifies this as a product of the Board of Works mint, one of several competing government mints operating under different administrative authorities during the Hongwu period.
