The Ibero-American series was a joint commemorative program launched in 1991 involving mints from Spain, Portugal, and their former colonial territories across Latin America and the Caribbean — an arrangement that produced coordinated thematic issues struck simultaneously across more than a dozen sovereign mints. The 1997 theme of traditional dances placed Bolivia's issue alongside parallel pieces from Mexico, Cuba, Argentina, and others, each nation selecting a dance of cultural significance within their own borders.
Bolivia's Casa de la Moneda in Potosí — one of the oldest operating mints in the Western Hemisphere, founded in 1572 — handled domestic striking for this series.
