| Reverse description | The full Romanian royal coat of arms occupies the centre of the field, featuring a quartered shield supported by two rampant lions, the ensemble surmounted by a royal crown and draped with an ermine-lined mantle. A scroll beneath the shield bears the motto NIHIL SINE DEO. The date 1882 is divided across the field to the left and right of the arms, with the Bucharest mint mark B at lower left. The denomination 10 BANI appears in large letters along the lower arc, all within a beaded border. |

Romania's coinage program in the early 1880s was undergoing serious revision as the country consolidated its identity following formal independence from Ottoman suzerainty in 1878. Several pattern strikes were produced to evaluate design and compositional options before the circulating series was confirmed. This copper piece is one of those exploratory strikes — produced for official inspection rather than release, which explains both its rarity and the frequency with which surviving examples appear in substantially better condition than the eventual circulation issue.
