| Obverse description | Central device features the elaborately rendered papal coat of arms of Pope Pius IX, comprising a quartered shield with diagonal bands and rampant lions in the lower quarters, surmounted by the papal tiara and crossed keys of Saint Peter. The shield is framed by ornate Baroque scrollwork with an angel's head at the base. The encircling legend reads PIVS·IX·PON MAX·AN·XX·, referencing the pontiff's name, title of Supreme Pontiff, and regnal year. The overall composition reflects the refined neoclassical engraving tradition of the Roman Mint under the direction of Carl Friedrich Voigt. |
