Wat Arun — the Temple of Dawn on the Chao Phraya — was the royal temple of Thonburi during the brief reign of Taksin, before Rama I moved the capital across the river to Bangkok in 1782. Its appearance on this workhorse circulation coin reflects a deliberate policy by the Thai government to keep Buddhist and royal heritage in everyday commerce. The bimetallic format was introduced partly as an anti-counterfeiting measure following a surge in fake 10 baht pieces that had plagued the previous generation of coins through the 1990s.
