Abkhazia's coin program occupies a peculiar legal space — the territory declared independence from Georgia in 1999, a status recognized by only a handful of UN member states. The National Bank issues collector coinage denominated in apsars, a currency that does not circulate and has no exchange rate, functioning purely as a numismatic product backed by Russian financial infrastructure.
The Cathedral of St. George in Lykhny — Elyr in Abkhaz — is among the oldest surviving Christian structures in the South Caucasus, with portions of the complex dating to the tenth century.
