Abkhazia's central bank has issued collector coinage since 2004, operating in a state recognized by fewer than a dozen UN members following the 1992–1993 war with Georgia and the more consequential Russian recognition in 2008. Khukhut Bgazhba was a prominent Abkhazian historian and archaeologist whose work on the medieval period of the region gave scholarly grounding to arguments for distinct Abkhazian cultural identity — making his commemoration on a coin a pointed political act as much as an honorific one.
