| 裏面の説明 | The Imperial chrysanthemum seal, rendered as a large sixteen-petalled flower with a raised central disc and radiating petals divided by fine incised lines, occupies the centre of the field. Surrounding the chrysanthemum, Japanese legends in Kanji characters are arranged along the inner border, reading clockwise from the upper left: the country name and commemorative inscription at the top and sides, the denomination at the lower left, and the reign-year date at the bottom. A beaded border frames the entire design. |

Issued to commemorate the 60th year of Emperor Hirohito's reign — the longest in Japanese imperial history — this was one of the first modern Japanese commemorative coins struck in fine silver, part of a broader government push in the mid-1980s to develop a collectibles market around imperial milestones. The issue coincided with Hirohito being just the second monarch in Japanese history to reach a 60-year reign celebration, a threshold so rare it carries its own ceremonial designation: kanreki.
