Part of Mongolia's long-running lunar zodiac series, this issue marks the Year of the Rat — the first sign in the twelve-year cycle — making it a natural entry point for collectors pursuing the complete run. Mongolia began issuing precious metal commemoratives in earnest during the 1990s through the Bank of Mongolia, largely targeting the international collector market as a foreign currency earner during a period of severe economic contraction following the collapse of Soviet subsidies.
