| Obverse description | The obverse displays the coat of arms of Tanzania in high relief at centre, featuring a shield charged with crossed tools, a spear, and wavy lines representing the sea, flanked by two human figures — a man to the left and a woman to the right — each dressed in traditional attire and standing on a grassy mound with flowering vegetation at their feet. A ribbon below the shield bears the national motto 'UHURU NA UMOJA' in raised lettering. The legend 'TANZANIA' arcs along the upper periphery in large capital letters, and the date '1998' appears in the lower field. |

| Additional information |
Tanzania's gold commemorative program of the late 1990s was issued partly in response to the growing international market for African wildlife coins, a niche aggressively developed by South Africa and several European mint clients throughout the decade. The Bank of Tanzania contracted production externally — the coin was not struck at any domestic facility.
KM#42 is struck in .9999 fine gold, a purity specification that became increasingly common in the 1990s as mints competed with the Canadian Maple Leaf standard established in 1979.
