Slovakia's 10,000 Sk denomination was the highest face value coin the National Bank ever issued, and this 2003 piece marking the tenth anniversary of Slovak independence is one of very few bimetallic coins in the world to pair palladium with gold. Palladium was chosen partly for its association with Slovak industrial output — the country's Volkswagen plant in Bratislava, opened in 1991, was already one of the largest automotive manufacturers in Central Europe by the time this coin was struck.
Mintages for this series ran in the low hundreds, issued exclusively as proofs for collectors and state gifts.
