Guinea's 1990 gold issues were produced during the tail end of Lansana Conté's first decade in power, a period when the government was actively courting international credibility after the economic wreckage of Sékou Touré's 26-year socialist experiment. Touré had banned private gold ownership and nationalized the mining sector; the irony of issuing gold collector coinage so shortly after his 1984 death was apparently lost on no one in Conakry.

These pieces were almost certainly struck by a European contract mint rather than domestically — Guinea had no meaningful coin production infrastructure of its own at the time.
