Guinea's currency has been redenominated twice since independence — the Syli replaced the franc in 1971, then the franc returned in 1985 at 1 franc to 100 Sylis. By 2012, chronic inflation had pushed the franc to the point where a 10,000-unit note was entirely practical for everyday transactions, not a high-value reserve instrument. Thomas De La Rue's involvement here is unremarkable for the region; they have printed the majority of Guinea's note series since the franc's reintroduction.
The hologram strip on this issue is notably thin relative to contemporaneous De La Rue output for other West African issuers — a cost-tier decision reflected across Guinea's 2012 series.
