Part of Armenia's ongoing zodiac series issued through the late 2000s, this gold piece was struck by the Central Bank during a period when Armenia was absorbing the early shock of the 2008 global financial crisis — GDP contracted by over 14% in 2009, one of the sharpest downturns in the post-Soviet space. Collector-oriented gold issues were a reliable source of hard currency revenue for the central bank precisely when it needed it most.
