Liberia has issued commemorative gold under its own authority since the 1960s, though the country operates no functioning mint of its own — production is invariably contracted to private minting houses in Europe, most commonly in Germany or Austria. Cortés remains a deeply contested figure; his 1521 defeat of Tenochtitlan killed tens of thousands and ended the Aztec empire within two years of his first entering the city as a guest.
