The adópengő was not a currency in any conventional sense — it was an indexed unit introduced in January 1946 specifically to protect tax receipts and postal revenues from the catastrophic inflation that was destroying the pengő in real time. By the time this 10,000 adópengő note circulated, the conversion rate between the adópengő and the ordinary pengő was being adjusted daily, then multiple times daily, then by factors that made calculation essentially meaningless.
Hungary's hyperinflation of 1945–46 remains the most severe ever recorded. The adópengő series was a fiscal stopgap, not a solution — the whole apparatus was swept away on 1 August 1946 when the forint was introduced at a conversion rate so extreme it has never been replicated.
