Kreis Hofgeismar was one of hundreds of German district administrations that issued emergency paper during the hyperinflationary collapse of 1923, when the Reichsbank's own output could not keep pace with the devaluation. By the time a ten-billion-mark denomination was necessary, the figures had become functionally meaningless — the note's face value could be wiped out by a single day's price movement. Local Notgeld of this denomination bracket was typically printed on short runs with whatever presses were available, often newspaper or commercial printers.
The stabilization arrived in November 1923 with the introduction of the Rentenmark, after which most district-issued paper was demonetized immediately and destroyed in bulk.
