The "Zlotnik" denomination is a deliberate historicism, reviving a medieval Rus' unit of weight equivalent to roughly 4.26 grams of gold — a name that had no continuous monetary use for centuries before Ukraine began applying it to this naturalist series. Vipera nikolskii, Nikolsky's adder, is a species whose taxonomic status was disputed for decades, with some herpetologists treating it as a subspecies of the common adder rather than a distinct species.
