The zlotnik was a pre-metric unit of weight used across the Russian Empire, equal to roughly 4.266 grams, and its revival here as a denomination name is a deliberate nod to Ukrainian numismatic heritage rather than any functional currency unit — these brass pieces circulate as collectibles, not tender. The Black Sea bottlenose dolphin population, which prompted this issue, has been under documented stress since Soviet-era industrial fishing drastically reduced fish stocks in the 1970s and 80s.
