The Xuantong dollar of 1910 was part of a centralization effort pushed by the Qing court to unify China's chaotic provincial coinage system under a single national standard. The project was directed by the Board of Revenue and represented one of the dynasty's last serious attempts at monetary reform before the 1911 Revolution ended imperial rule entirely. Xuantong — the Puyi reign — lasted only three years, and this issue was struck just one year before abdication.
Most examples encountered today came from hoards rather than prolonged circulation, which accounts for the relatively high average grade seen in the market.
