Obverse description The central device features the state emblem of the Democratic People's Republic of Korea in high relief, depicting Mount Paektu surmounted by a five-pointed star radiating rays of light, flanked by sheaves of rice bound with a ribbon and enclosing a hydroelectric dam and factory buildings. The emblem rests above a decorative scroll bearing an inscription in Hangul. Flanking the base of the emblem are two stylised floral sprigs. The Hangul legend 조선민주주의인민공화국중앙은행 curves along the upper periphery, while the denomination 1 원 and the date 2001 appear in the lower field.

Reverse description The reverse presents a charming depiction of a stylised rabbit standing upright in the centre of the field, referencing the Chinese zodiac Year of the Rabbit. The rabbit holds a heart-shaped cartouche bearing the Chinese character 福 (fortune/luck) on its chest. To the left, two flowering plants with serrated leaves rise from the ground line, which curves in an oval around the composition. Heart-shaped ornaments are scattered throughout the field, and a Chinese character appears to the lower right. A beaded border encircles the entire design. The year 1999, indicating the actual Chinese zodiac year of the Rabbit, appears along the lower ground line within the oval frame.
