Obverse description The national coat of arms of the Democratic People's Republic of Korea occupies the central field, depicting a hydroelectric dam and power lines set against Mount Paektu, all surmounted by a five-pointed star emitting rays and flanked by sheaves of rice bound at the base with a ribbon inscribed with the state name in Hangul. A circular legend in Hangul reading '조선민주주의인민공화국중앙은행' (Central Bank of the Democratic People's Republic of Korea) surrounds the device along the upper periphery. The denomination '1 원' appears in the lower field, flanked on either side by a small decorative sprig motif.

Reverse description A detailed landscape view of the traditional thatched-roof farmstead at Mangyongdae, Pyongyang, revered as the ancestral home and birthplace of Kim Il Sung, is depicted in fine relief occupying the central and lower field. Several traditional Korean mud-walled structures with rounded thatched roofs are shown set along a paved pathway, surrounded by mature trees rendered in high detail. The Hangul legend '만경대고향집' (Mangyongdae Hometown House) arcs across the upper periphery of the field. The Juche year and Gregorian date inscription '주체93 (2004)' appears along the lower exergue.
