Beschrijving keerzijde The crowned arms of Hesse occupy the center of the field, depicting the rampant Hessian lion on a horizontally lined shield, surmounted by a grand ducal crown. Two rampant crowned lions serve as heraldic supporters on either side of the escutcheon, which rests upon an ornamental cartouche. The circumferential legend, divided by a six-pointed star, encircles the composition, with the mint year appearing in the lower exergual area.

Aanvullende informatie

The Vereinsthaler was the product of the Dresden Mint Convention of 1838 and its successor agreements, which harmonized coinage across the fragmented German states into a single exchangeable silver unit. Hesse-Darmstadt's participation was less a sovereign choice than a commercial necessity — Frankfurt's banking houses demanded predictable cross-border specie. Ludwig III, who reigned from 1848 until 1877, issued these throughout the period of Prussian consolidation, and after the Austro-Prussian War of 1866 placed Hesse-Darmstadt firmly within the North German orbit, the type continued unchanged until decimalization rendered it obsolete in 1871.
