The Vereinsthaler was the product of the 1857 Vienna Monetary Treaty, which brought Austria and the German states onto a unified silver standard — one thaler equal to one and a half Austrian florins. Liechtenstein, though tiny and lacking its own mint, was a signatory and issued this coin through the Vienna mint. Johann II was just eighteen when he acceded in 1858, and would go on to reign for seventy years, the longest of any Liechtenstein prince.
The 1862 date makes this an early issue under that reign. Vienna mint production throughout the 1860s for minor treaty states was typically limited in run.
