| Obverse description | Four Chinese characters rendered in seal script (zhuanshu) are arranged in cruciform fashion around the central square hole, reading clockwise from the top: 天 (Thiên), 聖 (Thánh), 元 (Nguyên), 寶 (Bảo). The characters are bold and deeply cast, set within a plain inner rim bordering the square perforation and an undecorated outer rim. The flat field shows natural patination consistent with a cast copper cash coin of the late fourteenth century. |
