William II of Jülich received the ducal title in 1356, just five years before this issue began — part of a broader consolidation of Rhenish territorial authority in the wake of the Golden Bull. The Groschen Tournois type, derived from the French gros tournois first struck under Louis IX in 1266, had by this point become a widely imitated denominational model across the Low Countries and Rhine territories, each lord adapting its familiar architecture to assert local monetary authority. Jülich's adoption of the type placed it squarely within the commercial currency network of the lower Rhine.
Noss JMA#80f distinguishes this among several closely related die variants in the William II series.
