The Qajar gold tuman was Iran's primary high-value coin during a period when the dynasty was hemorrhaging territory to Russia. The Treaties of Gulistan (1813) and Turkmenchay (1828) stripped Persia of the Caucasian provinces, and the fiscal strain of successive military failures fell directly on the mint system. Tabriz, as the capital of Azerbaijan province and seat of the crown prince, operated as effectively a secondary royal mint — the heir apparent governed from there, giving the Tabriz issues a particular political weight within the Qajar monetary hierarchy.
Type W within the Fath Ali Shah series denotes a specific calligraphic arrangement of the shah's honorific titles, one of several die varieties catalogued by Album that collectors use to sequence production across his long reign.
