Witigis seized the Ostrogothic throne in 536 by deposing Theodahad, and almost immediately found himself fighting a losing war against Justinian's general Belisarius. These tremisses, struck in his name at Ravenna but carrying Justinian's titulature, reflect the political calculation of a king trying to signal legitimacy to both his own people and the encroaching Byzantine power. The arrangement fooled no one. Belisarius took Ravenna in 540, and Witigis was captured and brought to Constantinople, where he spent the remainder of his life as an imperial curiosity.
