| Popis líce | Central spoked wheel or rota motif with elongated petal-shaped lobes radiating between the spokes, rendered in a stylized geometric fashion typical of early medieval Lombard coinage. The design is surrounded by a circular legend in debased Latin script reading FLAVIA LVCA, identifying the issuing city of Lucca by its Roman name Flavia Luca. The lettering is arranged around the periphery of the flan and exhibits the irregular, somewhat crude engraving characteristic of eighth-century Italian municipal issues. The overall composition fills the small hammered flan in an accomplished if uneven manner. |

| Popis rubu | A bold pattée or Greek cross occupies the central field, its arms formed by clustered pellets or short strokes giving a beaded or budded appearance consistent with Lombard tremissis iconography. The cross is enclosed within a circular border from which radiate short linear devices. The surrounding legend consists of a repeated nonsensical sequence of letters, a common feature of late and post-Roman Lombard coinage where literacy among die-cutters had declined, rendering the inscription purely decorative rather than meaningful. The execution is vigorous but irregular, consistent with hand-struck provincial gold of the early eighth century. |
