Obverse description Central spoked wheel or rota motif with elongated petal-shaped lobes radiating between the spokes, rendered in a stylized geometric fashion typical of early medieval Lombard coinage. The design is surrounded by a circular legend in debased Latin script reading FLAVIA LVCA, identifying the issuing city of Lucca by its Roman name Flavia Luca. The lettering is arranged around the periphery of the flan and exhibits the irregular, somewhat crude engraving characteristic of eighth-century Italian municipal issues. The overall composition fills the small hammered flan in an accomplished if uneven manner.
