The overall workmanship reflects the degenerate imitative tradition of post-Roman barbarian tremisses struck in the name of the Byzantine emperor. |

The surrounding legend is entirely nonsensical, consisting of debased and garbled letterforms derived from repeated copying of Byzantine prototypes, reflecting the progressive deterioration of the original model over successive generations of Lombard die-cutters. |
