Obverse description Crude bust of the emperor Constans II facing right, depicted with a diademed and draped effigy rendered in a debased barbaric style typical of Germanic imitative coinage. The portrait shows the head and cuirassed shoulders in right profile, with simplified facial features reflecting the declining artistic quality of the Germanic die-cutters. A partial Latin legend surrounds the bust, reading D N COST-VS PP AI, a barbarous rendering of the standard Byzantine imperial titulature. The overall execution is irregular, consistent with an unofficial imitative tremissis struck by Germanic tribes.
