Anthemius, the last western emperor to rule with any credible military backing, was murdered in 472 by Ricimer — yet his name continued appearing on tremisses struck by Germanic successor authorities for decades afterward. This was not sentiment. A recognized imperial name lent legitimacy to barbarian fiscal administration at a moment when no stable replacement coinage existed in the fragmented west.
Attribution to a specific tribe remains genuinely contested among specialists. Visigothic, Burgundian, and anonymous Italic workshops have all been proposed for various dies in this series.
