Reverse description The reverse displays a frontal standing figure of the Archangel Michael rendered in a highly stylized, hieratic manner derived from Byzantine iconographic conventions. The archangel is depicted in long robes, holding a staff or cross in the right hand, with the left hand extended or holding a globus cruciger; the figure occupies most of the central field. The surrounding legend reads SCS MIHAEL (Sanctus Michael — Saint Michael), inscribed in debased Latin capitals around the periphery. The execution is characteristically crude yet expressive, typical of Lombard hammered gold coinage of the late eighth century. The reverse flan shares the irregular, slightly concave profile common to tremisses of this period.
