Slovenia introduced the tolar in October 1991, just months after declaring independence from Yugoslavia in June of that year. The National Bank was established and the new currency issued under considerable urgency — Yugoslavia's dinar was still circulating alongside the tolar during a brief transitional period, and the speed of the monetary changeover was itself a political signal to international observers watching the dissolution of the federation.
The tolar remained in circulation until January 2007, when Slovenia became the first former Yugoslav republic to adopt the euro.
