Uzbekistan declared independence from the Soviet Union in September 1991, but retained the Soviet ruble for over two years while the new state built the infrastructure for its own currency. The sum and its fractional tiyin denominations finally entered circulation in July 1994, replacing the ruble at a rate of 1 sum to 1,000 rubles — itself a reflection of the inflation that had ravaged post-Soviet economies in the intervening years. The 1 tiyin was, from the start, a denomination too small to purchase anything meaningful, and it vanished from active use almost immediately.
