Brunswick-Grubenhagen was among the smallest and most financially precarious of the Guelph partition territories, and the joint rule of Wolfgang and Philip II reflected a dynasty scraping to maintain coherence across a shrinking domain. The principality had no significant silver resources of its own; these thalers were struck from bullion sourced externally, which partly explains the relatively narrow emission window across nearly a decade of joint reign.
