| Descrizione del rovescio | Central device comprising the Prussian black eagle displayed, with wings spread and head turned to the right, holding a sceptre in the dexter talon and an orb in the sinister, the breast charged with a crowned monogram. The eagle is surrounded by a cruciform arrangement of the royal cyphers W R and A R (Wilhelm Rex and Augusta Regina), each initial surmounted by a royal crown, with four additional crowns placed at the cardinal points of the design. The upper field bears the Prussian royal motto SUUM CUIQUE (To each his own) along the circumference, while the lower arc carries the commemorative inscription KROENUNGS THALER 1861. The entire design is enclosed within a beaded border. |

William I had waited a long time. Passed over as regent for years while his brother Frederick William IV ruled and then descended into mental incapacity, William finally assumed the Prussian crown at age 64 in a ceremony at Königsberg on October 18, 1861 — deliberately chosen to echo the coronation of Frederick I in the same city in 1701. This thaler was struck expressly for that occasion. Within a decade, the man commemorated here would be proclaimed German Emperor in the Hall of Mirrors at Versailles.
