Hieronymus von Colloredo is better remembered today as Mozart's employer — and antagonist — than as a monetary authority, but his coinage was prolific. He ruled the Archbishopric from 1772 until Napoleon's reorganization of German territories effectively ended ecclesiastical princely power in 1803, making 1790 a relatively late issue from a reign already visibly losing political ground to Enlightenment-era secularism.
The "Lion Thaler" designation distinguishes this type within Salzburg's broader thaler output and aligns with the Dav EC III classification for late Holy Roman Empire ecclesiastical issues. Colloredo's notoriously poor relationship with his court musician ended the same year this coin was struck — Mozart left Salzburg's service in 1781, but the archbishop's reputation has never quite recovered.
