John Reinhard I ruled Hanau-Lichtenberg for over six decades, one of the longest reigns among the small Rhenish territories, and this Thaler was struck during the opening years of the Thirty Years' War — a conflict that would devastate the region and ultimately absorb enormous quantities of silver coinage into military financing. Hanau-Lichtenberg straddled the Rhine between French and German spheres, and its counts maneuvered carefully between Protestant alliances and imperial pressure throughout the war.
