John Reinhard I ruled Hanau-Lichtenberg for over six decades, one of the longest reigns among the small Rhenish territories, and this Thaler was struck during the opening years of the Thirty Years' War — a conflict that would devastate the region and ultimately absorb enormous quantities of silver coinage into military financing. Hanau-Lichtenberg straddled the Rhine between French and German spheres, and its counts maneuvered carefully between Protestant alliances and imperial pressure throughout the war.
Suchier's census identifies relatively few surviving examples across all die combinations for this type, consistent with the modest output expected from a county-level mint operating under wartime disruption.
