| Obverse description | Central field occupied by a large quartered heraldic shield bearing the multiple arms of the Ernestinian Saxony dynasty, including lions, an eagle, barry-bendy lozengy, a rose, and hearts, arranged in a multi-divisioned escutcheon with the date 1551 displayed above the shield. The shield is set within a beaded inner circle. The surrounding circular legend reads in Latin, interrupted by small crosses as word dividers, identifying the coin as the coinage of the sons of John Frederick the Elder, Duke of Saxony. The die-work is characteristic of mid-sixteenth century German hammered silver thalers, with bold Gothic heraldic engraving. |
