The surrounding circular legend reads in Latin, interrupted by small crosses as word dividers, identifying the coin as the coinage of the sons of John Frederick the Elder, Duke of Saxony. The die-work is characteristic of mid-sixteenth century German hammered silver thalers, with bold Gothic heraldic engraving. |
